LOST IN TRANSLATION? @ Riverside Studios

LOST IN TRANSLATION?  – 1-19 November 2010 – Riverside Studios

OPENING PARTY – SUNDAY 14 NOVEMBER 5.30pm!!!

When I first moved to London in 1995, I lived not far from the Studios and would go for double bills of Spanish films for a £3 student ticket, so I have fond memories of this place! Czech Centre has invited me to curate a show there to accompany a festival of Czech films – check out the film programme on their website HERE.

The theme of LOST IN TRANSLATION? – the issues of assimilation, one’s culture and identity – has been on my mind for a long time as I’ve lived abroad most of my adult life.

LOST IN TRANSLATION is an exhibition exploring what it is like to live in another country through the works of British and Czech artists with experience of living in the opposite countries. Each work here tells a different story about coping with the change of the environment, but what unites them all is that it’s impossible for an artist not to be influenced by it in their work.

WEEKEND

By total conincidence, I’ve just found a link to a project I helped with in 1997 – Julie Myers’ Weekend. Julie Myers’ split the script of her short film into 7 parts, each being filmed in a different country by different person. I filmed my part in Prague.

Naheed Raza – Silk Video

Naheed Raza has recently shown a commissioned film about the strange power of the desert at Bloomberg Space and when looking at his website, I came across this beautiful but kind of strange (cruel?) video. I am sure it looks quite beautiful as a large projection – it’s a 16mm film – but that pinned down spider also feel kind of uneasy. All his silk has been used up albeit celebrated.

You can see the video here: http://www.naheedraza.co.uk/silk.html

ARTSIDE – CLOSING PARTY

Last Friday was ARTSIDE Closing Party at the Railway Hotel in Southend. We were showing films from the Artside events and also my selection of short films about sea, including Sean Vicary, Jesse Fleming, Kevin Kelly, Felek Werpachowski and Donna Kuhn.

Unfortunately I had my camera on manual focus without realising so no good photos of us partying but you can watch most of the films embedded below:
